Camp Solari Helps Grieving Children Cope With Loss

Nonprofit now accepting applications for free bereavement camp

Las Vegas– Feb. 2014 – Camp Solari, a weekend bereavement camp sponsored by the non-profit Solari Hospice Foundation, will be held May 2-4 at Mount Charleston Lodge, 5375 Kyle Canyon Rd, Las Vegas, NV 8912. This year’s camp is funded in part by a donation from Las Vegas Solari Hospice Care and HealthCare Partners Nevada, along with a grant from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation. Solari Hospice Foundation is also proud to partner with Las Vegas-based Clear View Counseling, which orchestrates and leads the camp program.

Camp Solari provides grieving children ages 6 to 17 and their surviving caregivers with an opportunity to learn healthy coping strategies while honoring the memories of their loved ones. Among the many planned activities are art, music, talk therapy, drumming, dancing and nature walks. All weekend activities, along with lodging, meals and materials, are free to camp participants.

“This marks the tenth year that Solari Hospice Foundation has offered Camp Solari in the Las Vegas area,” said Gary W. Polsky, founder and president of Solari Hospice Foundation. “Since our first camp in the summer of 2004, we have been privileged to provide bereavement support and education to more than 500 children and families in Clark County. Through these efforts, we have helped them move beyond loss to a place of happiness and success.”

“Camp Solari is a valuable community resource that fits perfectly with HealthCare Partners Nevada’s Total Care Model, which offers a continuum of patient-centered care for all ages and stages, including end-of-life hospice care and bereavement support,” said Candis Armour, R.N., executive director of Las Vegas Solari Hospice Care. “Camp Solari reaches out to bereaved children during a pivotal time in their lives and provides them with a positive, nurturing, safe environment so they can express the many different emotions they may be feeling.”

Licensed marriage and family therapist Debora Jette, owner of Clear View Counseling, notes that when children lose someone close to them, especially a parent or sibling, it can seem like no one around them understands.

“Adults in their lives may be uncomfortable discussing the subject of death, while a child’s friends and peers may not have any personal experience in dealing with it, so there’s no one to really listen,” said Jette. “At Camp Solari, professional counselors open a dialogue about grief and guide children through simple techniques and exercises to explore thoughts and feelings in a productive, relaxed, non-threatening way. We help children realize that they are not alone and allow them to connect with others who have experienced similar losses.”
