Maintaining Mental Wellness: By Dr. Jeffrey Wagner

Mental well-being can play a key role in an individual's overall health, even more than many people might be aware. The ways in which individuals cope with stress and relate to others can have a direct impact on their physical health. For instance, long-term stress can cause elevated blood glucose levels among diabetics, according to the American Diabetes Association.

HealthCare Partners Medical Group encourages patients to be aware of potential symptoms of mental health issues, and to engage in activities that can help them regain mental well-being.

There are many warning signs of potential mental health problems, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These can include eating too much or too little, feeling helpless, experiencing severe mood swings and smoking or drinking more than usual. These issues can sometimes result from biological factors, stress or trauma, or a family history of mental health problems.

Some people can avoid these issues simply by pursuing more activities and making changes to their routine. Some helpful tips for achieving mental health can include:

1. Getting Enough Rest
Eight hours of sleep per night can help reduce stress and improve memory.

2. Staying Active
Roughly 30 minutes of moderate exercise a few times per week can improve production of endorphins and can also help distract from daily stresses, according to the Mayo Clinic.

3. Interacting with Others
A little social interaction can stimulate the brain and help provide a valuable outlet for any pent-up emotions.

4. Eating Healthy
A comprehensive diet including complex carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids and vitamins can help promote mental wellness, according to the Mental Health Foundation.

Maintaining a balanced mood and stable emotions serves to promote people's overall health. HealthCare Partners Medical Group recommends for individuals of all ages to consider steps they can take to improve their mental wellness.
